Cloud-based deployment in Sweden

Silver Spring Networks has announced plans to expand its public cloud network, data service and Internet Protocol platform to help upgrade ageing systems in Stockholm, Sweden.

In a deal announced at the Smart Cities Summit in London, UK, the US-based company will deploy its IPv6 platform to upgrade ageing lighting infrastructure with intelligent street light controls in the Swedish capital.

Silver Spring Networks also plans to deploy its international, internet of things (IoT), public cloud network and data service, Starfish, to Stockholm.

These deployments will be part of the European Union-funded GrowSmarter programme, which aims to deliver smart energy and mobility solutions to “Lighthouse cities” Stockholm, Barcelona (Spain) and Cologne (Germany).

The GrowSmarter goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 60% and create 1,500 jobs.

Eric Dresselhuys, executive vice-president of global development at Silver Spring Networks, said: “We see great synergy between GrowSmarter’s programme goals and Silver Spring’s own vision of a horizontal platform helping to stimulate sustainable innovation within the constraints of city bureaucracy and governance.

“By demonstrating the efficacy of open standards in enabling interoperability within intelligent lighting systems, we are thrilled to offer Starfish in Stockholm, and to help contribute to the city’s larger economic development and sustainability goals.”

Head of departments for the City of Stockholm Gustaf Landahl said: “Cities and the industry need to collaborate more closely together on innovation to break the status quo of silos and drive more horizontal-focused models.”

Stockholm will join other cities around Europe where Starfish will first be available including Copenhagen, Denmark; Bristol, Glasgow, and London, UK; and Crossmolina, Ireland.
