Europe research database launched

CERN has launched an online database allowing scientists to share research results and publications.

The repository, known as Zenodo, will be accessible to researchers from all scientific fields and was funded by the European Commission’s OpenAIREplus project as part of FP7. Commenting on the new database, Tim Smith, group leader for collaboration and information services at CERN’s IT department, said: “Not only do we want to know about publications that have come out of EC-funded research, but we now also want to know what datasets have come out of the work and where they are located. Data is currently much worse served than publications… there are very few places out there for researchers to put their datasets.”

Horizon 2020 is expected to encourage the spread of publications and research results through open-access portals in the EU, and, consequently, Zenodo is being identified as a key tool of dissemination.

Collating and sharing datasets was identified as a key objective in a report on the simplifications of Horizon 2020 made by Dr Michael Galsworthy of University College London and Professor Martin McKee of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
