Turkish town’s smart plan to receive Horizon 2020 funding

A Turkish town is set to receive €8m of funding from Horizon 2020 to help develop its smart city plan.

Soma, which is located in the Aegean region, is expected to receive the single largest grant from the EU research and innovation framework programme in Turkey. The funding will be poured into the CITyFiED Smart Cities project and will focus on increasing energy efficiency, reducing harmful emissions and encouraging smart electricity generation.

The project is being co-ordinated by several partners, namely the Soma Municipality, Soma Electricity Generation and Trade Inc., Istanbul Technical University, TÜBİTAK’s Marmara Research Center, Mir R&D Company, and other European partners. The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey is seen as the national co-ordinator of Horizon 2020 funding, according to the official Turkish press agency.
