Ukraine joins Euratom research programme

The EU and Ukraine have concluded an agreement on the association of Ukraine to the Euratom Research and Training Programme.

The agreement was signed in Brussels by European research commissioner Carlos Moedas and Ukraine’s foreign affairs minister, Pavlo Klimkin, in the presence of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko. It marks another step to further widen the two areas’ mutually beneficial co-operation in science and research.

“Ukraine’s great research and innovation potential offers promising partnerships for Europe. Ukraine will now have access to the full spectrum of Euratom activities. I hope Ukraine will make the most of these opportunities, conducting research for a prosperous future,” Moedas said.

The five-year Euratom Research and Training Programme (2014-2018) complements Horizon 2020 – which Ukraine joined last year – and has a remaining budget of €872.5m for direct and indirect actions in fission and fusion. It is specifically aimed at improving the levels of nuclear safety and radiation protection.

Ukraine was also associated to the previous Euratom research programmes between 2007 and 2013.

The association agreement is yet to be ratified by the Ukrainian parliament.
