ESA calls for app developers

The European Space Agency (ESA) is calling for 20 developers to attend a Space App Camp in Italy.

The event will be held from 12-19 September in the Roman suburb of Frascati. Successful candidates will be challenged with the creation of a variety of apps based on earth observations from the Copernicus programme.

Themes include agriculture, environment, lifestyle, tourism, health, smart cities, transport and logistics. ESA will provide access to satellite data for the development of applications in the Android and IOs operating systems. A dedicated API will allow developers to integrate satellite data into their apps.

Participation in this project is open to anyone over the age of 18 who is a citizen of an ESA member state or a country connected with the EU’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation framework programme participating in the Copernicus Space Component. Experience in integrating earth observation data into apps is not a prerequisite but at least one team member needs to be an impassioned app developer.

Participants are invited to chose their preferred topic and apply either individually or in groups of two or four.

Projects will be presented before a jury, which will decide on the winning team and present a monetary prize of €2,500.

The objective of the Space App Camp is the development and production of mobile apps using Earth observation data on smartphones. In doing so, it focuses on leveraging the possibilities offered by the European Earth observation programme Copernicus, which became operational with the launch of the first Sentinel Satellite in April 2014.

Registration for Space App Camp applications closes on 22 July. Click here for more information.
