Students win top artificial intelligence award

A research project part carried out in the framework of the EIT ICT Labs carrier project has won the award for ‘Best Student Video’ at the annual Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) Video Competition.

The winner was announced in Québec City, Canada, at the annual conference of the AAAI. The project by students of Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest, Hungary, recorded its latest research on AAC Telepresence. The film shows their results in combining mobile phone and head mounted display techniques with natural language processing in order to help people using augmentative and alternative communication tools.

The competition aims to encourage the greater use of AI through documenting exciting advances in research, education and application. Applicants for the award must produce a short video about an exciting AI project, narrate it so that it is accessible to a broad online audience and then publicise it through social media.

The annual AAAI conference aims to promote research and scientific exchange among AI researchers, practitioners, scientists and engineers in affiliated disciplines. It is also hoped public understanding of AI can be increased, improving the teaching and training of AI practitioners, as well as providing guidance for research planners and funders concerning the importance and potential of current and future AI development.
