UK semiconductor firm gets SME Instrument funding

A firm has secured €50,000 of funding from phase 1 of Horizon 2020’s SME Instrument to benefit from its semiconductor products.

Cascoda, which is based in Southampton and is a member of the SETsquared university partnership, won the funding to study how the SME’s current semiconductor technology can be best utilised. The business is looking to obtain possible new customers, distributors and partners. SETsquared brings together the UK universities of Bath, Bristol, Exeter, Southampton and Surrey.

The company’s current semiconductor products, which include patented technology, focus on smart technology. Its “unique … standards-based radio communication” products have a signal range that can reach throughout the house, are affordable and have a low power consumption, SETsquared says. Such developments target “the wireless home and building automation market”.

The SME Instrument was launched for the first time under Horizon 2020. According to the European Commission, phase 1 supports a ‘concept and feasibility assessment’, with the SME benefitting from business coaching support to the development of an initial business proposal.
