€70.5m available in latest H2020 space calls

The European Commission has announced three new calls for project proposals as part of Horizon 2020.

The funding available falls under three topics, namely ‘earth observation’, ‘protection of European assets in and from space’ (PROTECT), and ‘competitiveness of European space technology: technology and science’ (COMPET). Each call is being managed by the Research Executive Agency.

A total of €25m is being made available for ‘earth observation’, which is seeking build upon current investments and developing and bringing more products to market. Under the PROTECT call, €6.5m of funding is available in order to reduce the impact of collisions between satellites and debris.

Finally, COMPET sees a focus on innovation and increasing the competitiveness of European space technologies. The call, worth €39m, builds upon the 2014 call and maintains research support for critical and low TRL technologies. There is also a focus on further developing space science and encouraging international co-operation.

A further call has also opened under the topics ‘applications in satellite navigation Galileo 2015’ and is being handled by European GNSS Agency in Prague. The deadline for all research applications is 8 April 2015.
