Cities pilot waste management solutions

The UrbanWins project is set to begin pilot studies in six European countries to explore how cities consume, produce and eliminate their waste in the hopes of developing innovative solutions.

The eight pilot cities chosen will be located in Austria, Spain, Portugal, Romania, Sweden and Italy. The municipality of Pomezia, near Rome, was chosen as one of three Italian areas.

The Mayor of Pomezia, Fabio Fucci, said: “We are honoured to be here and to be part of this project which aims to develop new strategies and innovative solutions in the field of waste management.

“If Pomezia has been chosen as a pilot city it is because the change in the cycle of waste management and environmental protection over the last three years has been important. Pomezia has already achieved excellent results in the recovery of materials through recycling.

“With this project we aim, with the involvement of other European partners, to improve the process of reduction of waste at its source.”

The goal of UrbanWins is to develop and test methods for the research and testing of innovative and sustainable strategic plans for the reduction and management of waste.

The project, which has a term of three years, is co-ordinated by the City of Cremona in partnership with 26 organisations and funded by Horizon 2020’s Research and Innovation Programme.
