Businesses to share £100k low carbon funding

Nine start-up UK businesses will benefit from £100,000 (~€124,000) in funding for low carbon R&D projects.

The businesses were awarded the funding from Climate-KIC’s ‘Low Carbon Accelerator’ programme after pitching to an industry judging panel. The funds will be used to help launch new low carbon products and services to market.

Commenting on the announcement, Katharine Fuller, Innovation Birmingham’s senior project manager for EU projects, said: “Early-stage grant funding makes such a difference to start-up businesses. The timetable required for an entrepreneur to launch their product or service to market is critical, and the funding available through the European Climate-KIC initiative enables the best businesses starting up in the low carbon sector to receive a helpful grant.”

The nine businesses focus on waste, green energy and environmental efficiency. The winners are: Full Grown, 5L, Unicorn Power, Libralato, Alkali Solutions, WRK Design & Services, Petalite Battery, Greengineering and Civico Online Exchange Tracker.

Adding further thoughts, Fuller said: “In addition to this grant funding, all of the businesses will continue to work alongside the three entrepreneurs in residence who have been specifically appointed as advisors to the Low Carbon Accelerator programme. The ultimate aim is to help to launch as many sustainable start-ups as possible.”

In November, a total of 12 start-ups participating in the Low Carbon Accelerator programme will travel to Silicon Valley, California, United States, to participate in the annual Global Entrepreneurship Week.
