Brussels completed Graphene Flagship review
The European Commission has announced the results of the first annual review into the Graphene Flagship, praising the Future & Emerging Technologies (FET) project as having made ‘good scientific and technical progress over its first year of activities’.
In a blog post discussing the results of the three-day evaluation, Thierry Van Der Pyl, director of Excellence in Science, DG CONNNECT in the European Commission, said that review also endorsed the ‘revolutionary’ nature of the 2D material and its use in a ‘range of potential applications and uses’.
Looking ahead to the next stages of the FET Flagship, Van Der Pyl commented in the blog post that the Commission would soon be agreeing a new Framework Partnership Agreement with the Graphene Flagship, helping unlock further financing for the project from Horizon 2020.
Van Der Pyl added that there was also significant work underway in preparation for the operational phase of the FET Flagship. The Excellence in Science director added that the Scientific Foresight Unit of the European Parliament’s Research Service had recently named graphene in a report as one of the ‘Ten Technologies Which Could Change Our Lives’.
