Commission signs agreement to take HBP into next phase
The European Commission has signed a new framework partnership agreement with the Human Brain Project (HBP) which will enable it to support the project until 2020.
The new agreement, signed on 30 October, will allow the Commission to support the HBP under the EU research and innovation programme Horizon 2020.
It formalises the long term commitment, roles and responsibilities between the HBP consortium and the Commission until 2020, and reinforces the governance structure of the HBP as well as the essential contribution of cognitive neurosciences in it.
The HBP is a key EU research project aimed at developing a better understanding of how the human brain works. Launched in 2013 as one of two future and emerging technologies flagships, it will provide researchers with world-class infrastructure, ICT tools and mathematical models to improve their knowledge of the human brain, its diseases and its computational capabilities.
The project involves more than 400 researchers from 24 countries from all over Europe. It has an estimated budget of €1bn over ten years (2013-2023), with support from the Commission and from other partners, including universities, industries and member states’ own programmes.
