Graphene Week 2014 held in Gothenburg
Graphene Week 2014 has been held this week in Gothenburg, Sweden, with a focus on science, technology, and emerging applications of graphene. The event was sold out, with 450 researchers from across the globe gathering to discuss the material.
This year, the programme addressed fundamental studies of graphene and related two-dimensional materials; applications of graphene and related materials in electronics, photonics, spintronics, and sensing; applications of graphene in energy, including photovoltaics, energy storage, fuel cells and hydrogen storage; and large scale graphene production.
Graphene-based composite materials; graphene-related health and environment research; and applications of graphene in biomedical applications were also discussed.
Jani Kivioja from Nokia presented a number of industry perspectives on graphene-based humidity sensors, whilst Kostas Kostarelos from the University of Manchester, UK, talked about the emerging field of graphene in biomedicine. He set out where graphene is at the moment and concluded that there is a variety of graphene materials that need to be taken to a new level in terms of development and that this should take place in close alignment with the applications that will ultimately use the materials.
