Portal attends ESOF 2016
Horizon 2020 Projects: Portal is proud to be in attendance at this year’s EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF), which is being held in Manchester, UK.
Joining thousands of others from all over the world, PEN will keep you updated on the latest news in cutting-edge science that promises to continue to impact the daily lives of people everywhere.
Keynote speakers including Professor Brian Cox and Professor Sir Andre Geim, co-creator of ‘wonder material graphene, European Commissioner for Science and Innovation Carlos Moedas, and UK science minister Jo Johnson; the event aims to cover numerous areas of science and scientific innovation including medicine, climate change and the business of science.
Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell, president and vice-chancellor of the University of Manchester, said: “With its theme of ‘science as revolution’ what better place to hold ESOF 2016 than Manchester – the birthplace of the world’s first industrial revolution.”
Speaking at the event, Moedas offered his vision of science and the role of the commission in policies and programmes. “We are now entering a new era of global and open science,” he said, adding how the strategic importance of citizen science is becoming ever greater. “The relationship with the general public will define science in the 21st Century,” Moedas continued, before explaining how scientists are required to engage more with citizens in solving research challenges, and open data having been deemed the “default mode” for the next set of Horizon 2020 calls.
“Europe should lead the way to open science,” Moedas said, “not adapt to it later.”
