Moedas seeks to deepen EU-China science links

Carlos Moedas, European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation, will arrive in China on Sunday for a series of meetings to strengthen EU-Chinese science and research relations.

The commissioner will begin the trip with a two-day visit to the capital Beijing and will meet the country’s Minister of Science and Technology, Wan Gang. On Monday, Moedas and the minister will participate in a conference at the Chinese Academy of Science, where the commissioner will deliver a speech where he is expected to emphasise the EU and China’s essential roles in international research co-operation on global challenges, notably food, water, energy and health.

Moedas is also expected to focus on the potential of the increasing pool of talented Chinese scientists and researchers, as well as the commitment of the European scientific community to work in co-operation in areas of mutual and global interest. In addition, the commissioner will meet with a number of Chinese entrepreneurs, investors, R&D industry representatives and researchers at Tsinghua University in Beijing.

On Wednesday and Thursday, Moedas will attend the Summer Davos Conference in Dalian, the World Economic Forum’s global meeting on innovation, science and technology. During the event, the commissioner will hold talks with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang to discuss future science co-operation priorities.

The European Research Council is also attending the Summer Davos Conference.
