Geoghegan-Quinn launches new cow monitoring system
European Commissioner Máire Geoghegan-Quinn has unveiled a new app that will help cows get pregnant faster.
Launching Dairymaster’s MooMonitor+ at Dairymaster’s global headquarters in Causeway, Ireland, the app allows farmers to monitor their entire herd for health and fertility from their mobile phone. MooMonitor+ allows farmers to detect heat in the cow as well as providing advance health and wellness monitoring through advanced data analysis.
Speaking at the launch, Geoghegan-Quinn commented on the app’s potential in assisting farmers in milk productivity: “It is forecast that the lifting of milk quotas next year could result in strong growth in global demand for dairy products from Europe. Farmers in Ireland and across the EU will need to invest in a lot of new and innovative equipment if they are to meet their ambitious targets.”
Each cow wears an electronic monitoring necklace system. The latest model works though networking and cloud computing, allowing the farmer to monitor his entire herd around-the-clock with his phone. The mobile app allows two-way interaction with the system, removing the need to go back to the computer. When the system detects sick cows, it will send an immediate notification direct to your phone.
“The MooMonitor+ will basically allow farmers to have their herd in their pocket. This means that they can enjoy more family or free time, and their herd is still being monitored for health and heat detection on a constant basis,” added Dr Edmond Harty, chief executive of Dairymaster.
Further benefits of the new system include a battery lifespan of up to ten years and 210,000 data points of information on each cow every year.
