Budget and H2020 focus for Irish presidency
The Irish Presidency will focus on agreeing the EU’s budget and finalising the Horizon 2020 research programme during its six month rotating EU presidency.
Irish Ambassador Jim Hennessy outlined the Dublin government’s priorities at a public event at the European Commission’s building in the Maltese capital, Valletta.
The Irish government has said it hoped to conclude discussions on the EU’s 2014-2020 Multiannual Financial Framework. Speaking to delegates, Hennessy said: “I promise we will leave no stone unturned to get a deal that is acceptable to all parties.”
Budget negotiations broke down last year after European leaders failed to agree on reductions on EU spending.
The ambassador said Ireland would also focus on finalising agreement regarding Horizon 2020, the EU’s new research and innovation programme. Hennessy described Malta as: “very well placed to prosper from Horizon 2020.”
The programme will replace the Union’s current FP7 research initiative and will assist in developing EU’s science, encouraging job creation and tackling societal and environmental challenges across the 27 member states.
Furthermore, starting reform of the Common Agricultural Policy will become a focus for ministers as well as finding approval amongst member states for Cohesion Funding spending.
