Council meeting focuses on economic growth and job creation
National EU ministers are preparing to travel to Brussels for the May meeting of the Competitiveness Council.
The meeting will take place on 28-29 May in Brussels and will focus on targeted actions relating to the main building blocks of the European economy that encourage economic growth and job creation. Discussions will include the cohesion and deepening of the internal market, the digitalisation of intra-EU trade and a fully operational European Research Area.
The Council is expected to endorse a roadmap for the ERA and to set out the next steps to improve its governance. The purpose of the roadmap, which covers the years 2015 to 2020, is to identify and focus on measures that can provide the greatest benefits for Europe’s science, research and innovation systems.
Ministers will also be invited to adopt conclusions on open, data-intensive and networked research as a driver for faster and wider innovation. The conclusions will express political support for setting the right framework conditions for R&I focused on big data and for strengthening the whole data value chain in Europe. The Council will also hold a policy debate on open science, as a follow up to the Science 2.0 public consultation carried out by the European Commission.
The Council will also be invited to adopt conclusions on the digital transformation of European industry and on open, data-intensive and networked research. Ministers will also examine the digital single market strategy announced by the Commission earlier this month.
The sessions will be chaired by the Latvia’s Minister for Economics, Dana Reizniece-Ozola, and Minister for Education and Science, Mārīte Seile.
