Gilmore linked with Ireland’s European Commission role
Ireland’s outgoing Tanaiste, Eamon Gilmore, has been linked with the role of Ireland’s next European Commissioner following the announcement of his resignation as Labour Party leader.
According to the Irish Independent, Gilmore is being discussed as a potential replacement for Màire Geoghegan-Quinn. The news was revealed as Irish Taoiseach Enda Kenny has been linked with the role of European Commission President, despite ruling himself out of the running.
The newspaper also reports that an Irish cabinet minister said Environment Minister Phil Hogan had previously been considered the favourite for the new Irish Commissioner post, but that he may be required in Dublin as Fine Gael attempt to regain voter trust.
A new European Commission will be installed in the autumn of this year.
