MEPs scrutinise next research commissioner
The hearing for the next European commissioner for research, science and innovation has concluded in the European Parliament.
Carlos Moedas was scrutinised by MEPs during a debate in Brussels before his confirmation as part of the next College of Commissioners. The Portuguese nominee addressed the European Parliament and outlined his suitability for the post, drawing on his participation and enjoyment in Erasmus to demonstrate his support for closer co-operation in science, technology and research.
In his speech, Moedas said: “Erasmus was the defining moment of my life and the defining moment of so many in my generation.
“My story is a European story … [I want] to give back to Europe what Europe has given me over the years.”
The Portuguese secretary of state to the prime minister, who has been in charge of implementing the country’s EU/IMF bailout package, also outlined his three priorities for research and innovation, namely enhancing ‘the framework conditions’, delivering on Horizon 2020, and encouraging excellence in research.
Hearings of all 28 commissioner nominees will take place until 7 October, with a plenary vote by MEPs scheduled for 22 October.
