EIT announces 2016 KICs

Two new KICs in the areas of food and manufacturing are to be launched by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology as part of Horizon 2020.

Joining the current five KICs will be ‘EIT Food’, which focuses on ‘ensuring a climate-resilient and sustainable global food value chain’, and ‘EIT Manufacturing’, which aims to ‘strengthen and increase the competitiveness of Europe’s manufacturing industry.’

The selection criteria for the KICs will be released next month, followed by the publication of the guidance framework in November. The calls for proposals to establish the new KICs will then open in January 2016.

The announcement of the winning proposals and subsequent designation of the ‘EIT Food’ and ‘EIT Manufacturing’ KICs will take place next November. A further KIC in the area of urban mobility will be launched in 2018.

The EIT has a total budget of €2.4bn, a decrease from the original €2.7bn as part of Commission’s plan to divert some money away from Horizon 2020 to the European Fund for Strategic Investments, part of the Investment Plan for Europe.
