H2020 funds home water test for E.coli
An Irish company and research institute have together won €6m of funding from Horizon 2020 to develop a new home water testing device to check for E.coli and other water-borne diseases.
The device will enable the quick and easy analysis of harmful contaminants such as chemical and biological hazards. The money supports the SMARTER-Si project which is being run by the Cork-based Environmental Laboratories Services Ltd and Tyndall National Institute. The collaboration, along with several other European partners, aim collectively to develop up to ten new critical applications.
In comments carried in the local The Cork News press, Dr Kieran Drain, chief executive of Tyndall National Institute, said: “Water is a primary natural resource and a vital ingredient of everything we do in life. Recent events, as seen in the media, illustrate the importance we stress on a reliable and safe water supply.”
If successful, the new home water testing device will be the first affordable model of its kind developed.
