Revised fuel analysis to reach renewable energy targets
The Joint Research Centre and its partners in the Justice Enterprise Consortium (JEC) have launched a fresh investigation into the potential development of fuels from renewable sources. The Renewable Energy Directive (RED) has set a target of 10% of the EU’s transport sector to be fuelled by renewable energy by 2020.
The first JEC Biofuels Study was undertaken in 2011 and has since been updated to make allowances for changes in vehicle fleet composition, fuel demand and fuels and biofuels supply. Also considered are the regulatory amendment proposals which have been introduced to account for indirect land use change factors.
The new study will assess different fuel demand scenarios and their associated impact on achieving the 10% RED renewable energy target and the 6% Fuel Quality Directive (FQD) greenhouse gas emission reduction target for transport.
The research does not focus solely on the role of biofuels in road transport, since the RED and FQD mandated targets do not only consider biofuels as alternative fuels. Alternatives to both fossil fuels and biofuels in the EU transport sector have been investigated, using the latest available JEC Well-to-Wheels data.
