SEI confident on European energy funding
The Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) has welcomed efforts by the EU in combatting climate change and the investment in new technological developments.
Tom Gill of SEI made the comments ahead of the start of Horizon 2020, due to begin in 2014. The new research framework programme will replace FP7.
“FP7 has allowed a great deal of crucial research to flourish, but is soon coming to a close. Looking ahead, Horizon 2020 is a vital opportunity to take forward innovative research on climate, environment and development. The new Directorate-General for Climate Action set up in 2010, is also a milestone for Europe in meeting the climate challenge and corresponds to moves in governments across the EU to set up dedicated departments to handle climate issues.”
Gill added that such developments were vital to address the problem of the ticking climate change ‘time-bomb’, though was confident that through international collaboration, the EU could meet its Societal Challenge objective in ‘Climate action, resource efficiency and raw materials’.
“These developments are very welcome and necessary, and although time is fast running short, we are optimistic that with new research and effective and informed decision making, the EU can meet its aspiration for a safer climate for all,” he stated.
