H2020 to fund Ebola vaccine research
European Health Commissioner Tonio Borg has announced that Horizon 2020 will invest €25m in Ebola vaccine research.
The Union and EU member states have already invested €500m in research to combat the disease, which is most prevalent in West Africa. Speaking at a European Parliament plenary session in Strasbourg, France, Borg said: “There are already vaccines also being financed by the European Commission, but we need to accelerate the pace of this approval of the vaccines for human consumption.”
According to reports, further funding will be announced by the EU to tackle the virus in the next few days, including an announcement by EU Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva.
