FCH JU launches study on stationary fuel cells
The Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU) has initiated a study on the commercialisation of stationary fuel cells in distributed generation in Europe.
The study involved a coalition of more than 30 companies, public institutions and associations from the stakeholder community of the European stationary fuel cell industry.
The FCH JU said that energy systems of the future require new concepts, such as efficient, distributed power generation from natural gas. It was emphasised that energy efficiency is needed in order to save primary energy, reduce fuel imports and increase energy security.
The JU added that stationary fuel cells are able to convert ‘today’s fossil fuels (natural gas) and tomorrow’s clean fuels (green hydrogen) to electricity and heat at very high efficiencies’. They will therefore play a complementary role in a future energy system with more energy provided from renewable sources.
