Venture aims to build future European rail network
A transport project focusing on developing a digitalised rail network has begun its work after receiving funding from Horizon 2020.
The In2Rail project focuses on addressing issues regarding the maintenance, management, engineering, energy consumption and infrastructure of Europe’s railways. The venture will use the funding from the Commission to help create a network that is cost effective, has good capacity and is resilient.
The project has a total budget of €18m and will specifically examine rail power supply and energy management solutions, as well as interconnected traffic management systems that are automated and interoperable. The venture will also explore how new technologies can assist with the integration, optimisation and sharing of rail maintenance, infrastructure management and engineering. The venture will feed its results into the new SHIFT2RAIL public private joint undertaking.
Other railway projects that have also been launched this month are the €16m Roll2Rail project, which aims to support vital technology to help transform the future design of trains, and the €12m IT2Rail project, which centres on better co-ordination and interoperability on long distance journeys using buses, aeroplanes and trains. Results of these projects will also be taken into consideration by the railway JU.
