Chemical Toxicology group, Centro de Química Estrutural, Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon

Areas of Expertise

The Chemical Toxicology group belongs to the Chemistry and Toxicology of Bioactive Molecules group of Centro de Química Estrutural (CQE), a research unit of Instituto Superior Técnico – University of Lisbon. The mission of CQE is to contribute to the progress of society by providing top quality research, development and innovation activities in diverse areas of chemistry.

The group’s expertise in assessing the effects of bioactivation of chemical agents from endogenous, environmental, drug, diet and occupational exposure sources is anchored on the ability to synthesise biomarker standards and develop/validate sensitive analytical methodologies. Focus has been placed on the development of synthetic and mass spectrometry-based methodologies for the use of covalent adducts formed with proteins (adductomics), directed towards: 1) risk assessment of drugs used in chronic therapies (e.g. anti-HIV drugs), 2) development of early tumour initiation biomarkers, and 3) development of diagnosis tools of diseases induced by endogenous metabolites.

Research Interests
  • Environmental toxicants;
  • Drug-induced toxicity;
  • Mechanisms of chemical carcinogenesis;
  • Metabolic activation;
  • Adductomics;
  • Proteomics; and
  • Metabolomics.
