EU-US boost research co-operation

The European Commission and US government have concluded a deal which will see researchers from both sides of the Atlantic co-operate more closely on Horizon 2020-funded projects.

The EU-USA Implementing Arrangement enables co-operation between US organisations and Horizon 2020 participants in cases where the US organisations are funded by the US and do not receive any funding from the framework programme.

According to Research Commissioner Carlos Moedas, it will mean that the “best talent” from across Europe and America will now be able to work “even closer together” to confront the global challenges facing society.

“Bright ideas should know no boundaries, so European research and innovation is open to the world for collaboration,” he added.

The agreement streamlines collaboration between a selected Horizon 2020 project and a US body by allowing researchers to organise their co-operation outside the formal Horizon 2020 Grant Agreement signed for each project, in accordance with the applicable laws, rules, policies, and regulations of their respective funding programmes.

It has been signed by Moedas and US ambassador to the EU Anthony L Gardner.
