Hebrew University hails success
An Israeli academic institution has highlighted its success in securing EU research funds in 2015.
Hebrew University of Jerusalem researchers were awarded 14 grants from the European Research Council last year, the highest in the country. Total funding received exceeded €23m, encouraging research in the areas of medicine, mathematics and sciences, and humanities.
Six of the researchers were awarded Consolidator Grants, whilst eight won Starting Grants.
The university’s vice-president for research and development, Professor Isaiah Arkin, said: “These 14 Hebrew University researchers are in the first ranks of scientists not only in Israel but around the world.
“The awarding of these grants by the EU will strengthen research in Israel and will enable our researchers to make breakthroughs that benefit all of humankind.”
Four women from the university were awarded ERC grants in 2015, including the university’s first female grant recipient in mathematics, Professor Tamar Ziegler, and Israel’s only Consolidator grant recipient in the social sciences and humanities panel for 2015, Professor Elisheva Baumgarten.
The Hebrew University of Jerusalem is thought to produce one-third of all civilian research in Israel.
