Digital innovation would boost growth and create jobs, say ministers

The trio presidency of Italy, Latvia and Luxembourg has called for a greater focus on digital innovation during each presidency.

In a statement, the EU member states said the focus of this area of innovation would help improve the economic circumstances of the Union.

“Italy, Latvia and Luxembourg agree on the need for Europe to push digital innovation as a boost for growth and job opportunities (on the footsteps of  the Digital Agenda 2020) and are committed to finding a common view for the 28 EU countries on the Connected Continent Package and on the Network and Information Security directive.”

Italy is currently chairing the Council of the European Union, after which Latvia will follow in the first half of 2015 and then Luxembourg.

“Italy considers digital development a priority of its Presidency of the Council of the European Union and will work for Europe to speak with one voice on internet governance – a commitment that will continue in the forthcoming semesters under the Latvian and Luxembourg presidencies.”

The joint statement was released after a meeting held at the Ministry for Economic Development, when Antonello Giacomelli, Italian Undersecretary responsible for Communication, exchanged views with representatives of the next two EU Council presidencies, namely the Prime Minister of Luxembourg, Xavier Bettel, and Anrijs Matiss, the Latvian Minister for Transport.
