Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové

Areas of Expertise

The Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové is the leading institution for education and research in East Bohemia and belongs in the top ten medical scientific and educational organisations in the Czech Republic.

The faculty was established as the first of the new medical faculties immediately after the end of World War II and became a part of Charles University, the oldest university in Central Europe. Since its foundation, the faculty underwent a very intensive development.

There are almost 1,400 students enrolled in undergraduate study programmes of general medicine and dentistry at the Faculty of Medicine. In the last 20 years, the faculty has organised study programmes in English for international students, with approximately 300 students, mainly coming from the European Union, being enrolled every year.

Doctorate study programmes are a significant part of the teaching offered at the faculty, and there are 20 programmes accredited which cover all major fields of theoretical and clinical subjects. Currently, there are about 250 PhD students studying and working in several research areas and we are also closely involved in the harmonisation of the PhD programmes within the EU.

The faculty has organised the annual International Medical Postgraduate Conference since 2004 and on this occasion the best PhD students from a dozen EU countries are given the opportunity to present their results at an event that is supported by ORPHEUS (Organisation for PhD Education in Biomedicine and Health Sciences in the European System). Presentations are evaluated by an international jury, the members of which are internationally recognised scientists from ten EU states. We believe this is an effective way of harmonising the quality of PhD programmes with the EU and also to promote communication among students within the Union.

Research Interests

The Faculty of Medicine pays special attention to scientific research that takes place at more than 40 scientific institutes and covers a very wide range of biomedical disciplines from theoretical, through preclinical and clinical disciplines to co-operation with the commercial sector.

The main research fields include:

  • Lifestyle diseases affecting the cardiovascular and gastrointestinal system;
  • Oncology and hemato-oncology; and
  • Ageing and related health problems including studies of regeneration at different levels.

Research in each area is wide and includes processes from the molecular and cellular level up to the clinical research.

In recent decades, the Faculty of Medicine has developed strong research teams, which are among the most important, not only in the Czech Republic, but also due to the long-term international co-operation in Central Europe.

The faculty maintains close partnership and long-term placements of other scientific research institutions in Europe and the United States. Of these, the most significant is collaboration with Mayo Clinic, Rochester (USA), where it has offered placements to undergraduate and postgraduate students on long-term internships for almost 20 years.

The faculty has contributed significantly to the research projects of FP6, FP7 and the Visegrad Fund. The main source of funding for research at the medical faculty is the body of government agencies (Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education), as well as the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and the resources of the Charles University.

Expansion of the research teams’ activities have led to the need to create new space for science and education. Therefore, with the help of of EU Research and Development for Innovations Operational Programme, (registration number CZ.1.05/4.1.00/04.0152), the university campus will open in 2015 and will provide new space for education, science and research.

The faculty offers modern, fully-equipped research laboratories along with high quality research teams, with a successful record of study results. At present, the Faculty of Medicine is preparing for the new planning period and research projects in the upcoming framework programme, Horizon 2020.

The Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové is an excellent partner for future co-operation with other institutes in EU. Please visit www.lfhk.cuni.cz for further information.
