Moedas meets philanthropist Gates

The European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation is holding talks with Bill Gates this week in Brussels and London.

Carlos Moedas met with Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, on Monday in Brussels, and is set to hold further talks on Tuesday in London, when he will also meet a group of bioscientists.

On Monday, the commissioner also delivered the opening speech at the European Commission conference ‘A new start for Europe: Opening up to an ERA of Innovation’. Moedas is expected to attend the second day of the conference with the European Commission Vice-President for Jobs, Growth, Investment and Competitiveness, Jyrki Katainen, on Tuesday. The vice-president will deliver the conference’s keynote speech.

Later in the week, Moedas will travel to his native Portugal, and the capital Lisbon, where he will be awarded with the ‘Order of Civil Merit’ from King Felipe VI of Spain. This will be followed by the delivery of a keynote speech at the Vodafone Event on Digital Agenda and Innovation.

Whilst in Portugal, Moedas will also address the national parliament. He will then travel to Lindau in Germany to meet with Reinhold Mitterlehner, Vice-Chancellor and Federal Minister of Science, Research and Economy of Austria, take part in the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting, and attend the dinner of the ‘Foundation Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings’ as a guest of honour on Sunday.
