H2020 focuses on ‘open access’

Horizon 2020 will encourage greater and more open access to published papers, according to the European Commission.

In comments carried in the Times Higher Education supplement, Robert-Jan Smits, the director general of research and innovation at the European Commission, said Horizon 2020 could help make research papers more accessible. Smits said: “With our €80bn we can make one hell of a difference. We’re clear about the huge potential that exists on open access.”

Open Access focuses on making research papers freely available within several months or a year of publication. Specific new emphasis has been put on open access to research publications, according to proposed Horizon 2020 regulations.
