IMI highlights PPP successes

Public private partnerships set up under Horizon 2020 are now delivering socioeconomic value.

The is the statement from the IMI, which says impact is being had in key industrial sectors through the Joint Undertakings (JUs), including aviation (Clean Sky and SESAR) electronic components and systems (ECSEL), health (IMI), and fuel cells and hydrogen for transport and energy solutions (FCH).

The PPPs, partnerships between the EU, industry and in some cases EU member states, presented their activities and successes at the European Parliament during the European Innovation Summit in Brussels, which was attended by Horizon 2020 Projects. The session aimed to highlight the added value of the PPP model and outline why two new PPPs have been set up in the fields of bio-based products and rail under Horizon 2020.

According to IMI, its projects are helping to speed up drug development in addition to aiding the reduction in the use of animals in medical research and establish new research resources, networks and infrastructures. IMI says it is also catalysing unprecedented levels of collaboration between the private and public sectors.

Meanwhile, Clean Sky is delivering large demonstration projects to help realise lower air and noise pollution and SESAR is helping to realise a number of solutions to help modernise European air traffic management. Furthermore, the FCH JU has helped to spark investment in the fuel cells and hydrogen industry.
