Solar project secures major funding

A Climate-KIC start-up has garnered €4m in financial backing from three energy funds in the Netherlands.

The Solease project provides homeowners with solar panels for a fixed monthly cost with the goal of helping to make solar power more affordable. The company purchases, installs and maintains the solar panels for a monthly cost that is lower than the electricity price charged by the utility firm.

Commenting, SHorizoinolease finance director Roderick Wisselingh said: “Through our collaboration we can not only achieve an annual CO2 reduction, but also give a substantial boost to the sustainability of these households.”

With the new funding, nearly 1,000 homes have had the solar panels installed in the Dutch provinces of Overijssel, Limburg and Utrecht. It is anticipated that 5,000 houses will eventually benefit from the project.

The project began in 2011 and is part of the Climate-KIC’s Accelerator programme.
