Project profile: EUREST-PLUS

The European Regulatory Science on Tobacco: Policy implementation to reduce lung diseases (EUREST-PLUS) research team includes experts from numerous scientific disciplines.

Based in ten European countries, as well as in Canada, the project addresses four objectives linked to the cessation of tobacco use, which is fundamental for reducing chronic, non-communicable diseases.

These four objectives are the evaluation of the psychosocial and behavioural impact of TPD and FCTC implementation; the assessment support for the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) implementation through secondary dataset and trend analyses; documenting changes in e-cigarette product parameters (technical design, labelling, packaging and chemical composition); and enhancing innovative joint research collaborations.

Primarily, the project aims to improve health in low and middle income countries (LMICs) and in the more vulnerable populations of high income countries (HICs).

New knowledge produced through the project will target the media, fellow researchers, patient networks, policy makers and the general public through multiple avenues.

The EUREST-PLUS consortium consists of 13 partners, including the Belgium-based European Network on Smoking and Tobacco Prevention (ENSP); Kings College London, UK; and the European Respiratory Society, Switzerland.

The majority of research partners work in EU or international tobacco regulatory science, policy making and/or in policy implementation.

The project is led and managed by co-ordinator Dr Constantine Vardavas of ENSP.

Vardavas liaises with the European Commission to guarantee legal obligations are met following the grant agreement.
