EU funds Slovenian health programme

Slovenia’s Ministry of Economic Development and Technology has issued a decision awarding EU funds for the Healthy lifestyle programme.

The programme will be implemented by the Planica Sports Institute of the Republic of Slovenia, and has overall funds of €2.1m. The European Social Fund contribution amounts to 85% of the overall value, which is just under €1.8m.

The objective of the programme is to add incentives for primary school pupils to achieve a healthy lifestyle through sports activities as well as the active inclusion of 20-30% of primary school pupils.

The primary objective of the programme will provide five hours of sports activities for pupils per week and aims to aid the elimination of consequences derived from the negative effects of a modern lifestyle.

The children included in the programme will be subject to everyday professionally guided exercise which is in accordance with the recommendations of the EU guidelines for physical activity and in accordance with the strategy of the government of Slovenia in the field of physical activity for the promotion of health.

A mixture of indoor, outdoor and field sports will also be presented in the framework of the programme before the pupils are introduced to urban sports.

The programme took into account the recommendations of an evaluation of the healthy lifestyle 2010-2013 programme. It identified positive effects of the programme, including positive changes regarding motor skills, physical characteristics, inclusion into the sports programme, and attitudes towards the effects of sports on personal development.
