Ireland encourages data privacy and innovation deal

Ireland’s Centre for Data Analytics, known as INSIGHT, will this week propose a ‘Magna Carta for Data’ according to news reports.

The Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) backed centre hopes the agreement will help protect individual privacy whilst also encouraging data innovation in the EU.

In comments carried by Silicon Republic, Barry O’Sullivan, director and leader of INSIGHT’s strategic engagement with Europe and Horizon 2020, said: “We need comprehensive legislation that defines and defends the rights of European citizens while enabling innovation in data research.”

The charter document will be presented to the European Commission, MEPs, industry representatives in an event that will include a speech by Ireland’s Data Protection Minister, Dara Murphy.

INSIGHT was set up in 2013 and received an initial investment of €88m by SFI.
