Reshuffle sees DG leadership changes at CONNECT and GROW

It has been revealed that Robert Madelin will leave DG CONNECT to become an advisor on innovation.

According to Science Business, 11 of 33 DGs will see changes, including industry, education and culture, and health. The news comes after a reshuffle by European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker. None of the European commissioners are affected.

Madelin will take up the new position at the European Political Strategy Center (EPSC), the Commission’s in-house think-tank and a revamped version of the former Bureau of European Policy Advisers.

The ESPC provides specialised policy advice and forward-looking studies to the president and the College of Commissioners. One of DG CONNECT’s current deputy director generals, Roberto Viola, will take over from Madelin.

Meanwhile at DG GROW (formerly Enterprise and Industry), director general Daniel Calleja Crespo will take on a new role at DG Environment and will be replaced by Lowri Evans. Current DG Education and Culture director general Xavier Prats Monné will move to a role in DG SANTE.

Robert-Jan Smits will stay as director general of DG Research and Innovation.

Further changes are expected to be announced. The moves are effective from the start of September.
