IMI to invest €200m in Ebola research

Brussels is set to announced further research financing to help combat Ebola, according to sources speaking to Reuters.

The news agency says that an announcement will be made before the end of the week that will see the Innovative Medicines Initiative, which is part funded by Horizon 2020, invest €200m in new vaccines, drugs and diagnostic tests. Two sources told Reuters that the money is likely to be particularly directed towards clinical trials and the testing of three experimental vaccines. One of the sources said that the money would also further encourage knowledge co-operation and help increase capacity sharing.

If confirmed, the money brings the total investment by the EU into tackling Ebola to €725m following a pledge by European Health Commissioner Tonio Borg this week of €25m and an earlier announcement of €500m.
